  INTRODUCTION

  • The Ghana Association of Travel and Tourists (GATTA) was founded in 1957 and currently has a membership 180 Travel and Tourists Agents registered in Ghana. It has been affiliated with The Universal Federation of Travel Agents Associations (UFTAA) since 1967 and in 1995 became an arm of the Ghana Tourism Federation (GHATOF) an umbrella Association of Tourism Trade Associations registered in Ghana.

  • In pursuit of avenues to expand their businesses, the Association has developed “THE GOLDEN FACE OF GHANA” - a tourism product development and promotional initiative aimed to promote safe and responsible domestic and international tourism in Ghana.

  • This project is GATTA’s humble contribution towards Ghana’s major launch pad in 2007 to increase international visitors and tourism receipts. Ghana will be celebrating its 50th Independence Anniversary as well as the 200 years of the abolition The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade in 2007 and will be organising a series of events to attract international visitors into the country.

  • As a Trade Association, GATTA is also motivated by Government’s policy and the vision of the Ministry of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital City of making tourism one of the four priority sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, and mining identified to accelerate the reduction of poverty in Ghana.

  • We believe that tourism with its special attributes of being multi-sectored and a catalytic economic activity that propels the growth of all sectors is capable of providing secondary income earning opportunities for the economically vulnerable in society including the unskilled youth, subsistent farmers and fishermen.

  • We also share the conviction that tourism has proved its versatility as a sustainable economic activity tool used to regenerate depressed local economies worldwide and has become the leading employer in the world economy. It has also been the means by which the conservation of large tracts of fragile biodiversity ecosystems has been sustained and world cultural heritage sites and relics preserved and shared with the rest of the world.

  • It is for these reasons that GATTA will be seeking public and private sector, local and international partners to assist “ THE GOLDEN FACE OF GHANA” project to develop and promote tourism sites and products to increase opportunities for wealth creation in host communities.
